What is Mediation?
Mediation is facilitated negotiation. (see also Negotiation)
Sometimes one or more of the sides to a negotiation need help to reach a successful agreement. You may or may not have tried to reach agreement on your own. The problem is that someone (or everyone) feels that they can not communicate with the other side -- or you have tried to communicate and communication has broken down.
The parties are now deadlocked. The deadlock can be because of lack of trust or unequal power or other obstacles.
That’s where the mediator comes in and helps. The mediator keeps the process fair and on track (moving ahead toward an agreement).
Mediators are trained professionals who have no vested interest in the outcome (neutral, objective) and who are skilled at helping parties overcome the obstacles to reaching successful agreements.
Mediators do not decide the outcome. You do.
Mediators manage the process and keep you moving toward your goals.
